The short answer
AI Overviews cite YouTube and Reddit far more than any business website, and the business sites they do cite are small and narrowly specific rather than large and authoritative. Specificity beats authority here, which is unusually good news for small operators.
What we logged
We captured live search results for fifty-three queries at Minneapolis geo and recorded every domain cited inside the twenty-nine AI Overviews that appeared.
| Domain | Citations | Type |
|---|---|---|
| youtube.com | 92 | Video platform |
| reddit.com | 52 | Forum |
| google.com | 18 | Platform documentation |
| clicksgeek.com | 10 | Small niche agency |
| smith.ai | 8 | Product company |
| builtrightdigital.com | 7 | Small niche agency |
| projul.com | 7 | Industry software |
| oncrew.ai | 6 | Small product company |
Two things stand out, and they point in opposite directions for anyone whose plan is written content on their own website.
Specificity appears to beat authority
In traditional organic rankings, a site with three thousand referring domains beats a site with thirteen almost every time. Domain authority compounds and small sites struggle against it.
The AI Overview citation data does not look like that. The agency domains being cited are not household names. They are small operators writing narrowly and thoroughly about one specific thing.
The plausible explanation is that a system extracting an answer is looking for the most directly useful passage, not the most authoritative publisher. A page that answers exactly the question asked, with specifics, is more quotable than a broad page from a larger site that mentions the topic in passing.
For a small business this is genuinely good news, and it is a meaningfully different game from the one traditional SEO has been playing.
How to write something quotable
Answer in the first two sentences
Content built to warm up before answering is structurally disadvantaged. If the question is what something costs, the number or range belongs near the top, not after four paragraphs of context. Put the answer first and the reasoning after.
Use specifics, not adjectives
Competitive pricing and fast response are unquotable. A range with the variables that move it, or a stated response window, can be extracted and cited. Vagueness is the single most common reason good content never gets quoted.
Structure around the questions people actually ask
We harvested three hundred and eighteen unique People Also Ask branches across these queries. Those are effectively the sub-questions a topic decomposes into. Using them as headings, and answering each one plainly, is the most direct route to being the source that gets pulled.
Be narrow
A page about marketing will not be cited. A page about when holiday lighting installers actually get booked in Minnesota might be. The cited sites in our sample won by being specific enough that no broader page competed properly.
Say the thing others will not
Content that includes the honest caveat, the situation where the answer is no, or the number nobody publishes, is more useful and more distinctive. It is also harder to substitute with a generic paragraph.
The uncomfortable part: video and forums
If YouTube is cited ninety-two times and Reddit fifty-two across the same twenty-nine summaries, a strategy consisting entirely of articles on your own domain is competing against formats that are structurally favoured.
Video
A short companion video for a topic you have already written about is not a separate content programme. It is a second format for work already done, in the format that gets cited most. For local trades this is unusually easy, because the work is visual and the footage largely exists already on phones.
Forums
Reddit citation is harder to act on honestly, because promotional posting is both against community norms and generally counterproductive. The version that works is genuine participation: answering questions in your area of expertise, as yourself, without pitching. It is slow, and it is the only approach that does not backfire.
How to tell whether it is working
This is genuinely harder to measure than traditional rankings, and anyone claiming precise attribution should be treated carefully.
- Search your target questions periodically and check whether an AI Overview appears and who it cites. It is manual, and it is the most direct evidence available.
- Watch for impressions rising while clicks stay flat, which can indicate summary inclusion without a click.
- Ask new customers how they found you. Some now say they asked an assistant, which is a data point no analytics package will give you.
- Track whether the specific pages you wrote to be quotable are the ones gaining visibility.

Questions people ask about this
01How do I get my business cited in AI Overviews?+
Answer a specific question directly in the opening sentences, use concrete numbers instead of adjectives, structure the page around the sub-questions people actually ask, and stay narrow. In our sample the cited business domains were small and specialized rather than large and authoritative.
02Does domain authority matter for AI citations?+
Less than it does for traditional rankings, based on what we observed. The business domains cited across twenty-nine AI Overviews were mostly small niche operators, not major brands, which suggests extraction favours the most directly useful passage over the most authoritative publisher.
03Why is YouTube cited so often?+
We can confirm it was cited roughly ninety times across our sample, far more than any other domain, but our data shows the pattern rather than the cause. The practical implication is that a companion video for topics you have written about is worth making.
04Should I post on Reddit to get cited?+
Only through genuine participation. Promotional posting violates community norms and generally backfires. The workable version is answering questions in your area of expertise without pitching, which is slow but does not damage anything.
05Is this different from normal SEO?+
It overlaps but is not identical. The page still has to exist, be crawlable and be good. What changes is that being quotable matters alongside being rankable, and that specificity appears to carry more weight relative to authority than it does in traditional rankings.
